There are so many things to do during your visit to the Smokies. Here are our top 5 favorites when traveling to the Smoky Mountains with kids this Summer!
Dollywood Theme Park
Located in Pigeon Forge, Dollywood Theme Park is an attraction for all ages. Although known for roller coasters, and Dolly Parton of course, Dollywood has something to do for everyone. From young children to teens, and even the grandparents will not be disappointed. If you are a thrill seeker, you will not want to pass on Dollywood. You will have to chose if the speed on the Lightning Rod is your favorite or if you prefer the unique feel of soaring through the Smoky Mountains on the Wild Eagle. For the younger ride enthusiasts, you can search for ‘Big Bear’ on Dollywood’s newest coaster Big Bear Mountain, or ride a bear on one of my personal favorites Black Bear Trail. Don’t forget to ride the train!
If keeping your feet on the ground is more your vibe, no fear, there is so much more to do. A variety of shows and seasonal entertainment are scheduled during the day throughout the park, and in my opinion are top notch. The kids will love the playgrounds and splash pads, while the parents take a break. Trust me, you will get your steps in at Dollywood. If you are a foodie, Dollywood is for you too! Lots of options for a meal or snack, also aligned with the seasonal festivals presented. The cinnamon bread is a must!
All of the festivals presented by Dollywood are amazing, but the Smoky Mountain Summer Celebration is special. The details that go into the preparation and decorating of the park are unmatched. The Gazillion Bubble show is a hit, and a nice way to catch some air conditioning during a hot Summer day. Then, no better way to finish the night than in Wildwood Grove with a dance party followed by a drone and firework show. Your kids will sleep good after this.
Great Smoky Mountains National Park (GSMNP)
Did you know the GSMNP has become the most visited national park in the United States? If you have been there, there is no surprise as to why. Wildlife, waterfalls, scenic drives, and countless trails. Kids love the natural swimming holes. You could spend all day or your entire vacation in the park doing all the things including but not limited to hiking, biking, having a picnic or catching a nap. Just keep an eye out for visitors, a bear could wander your way. No chance that your adventures in the Smoky Mountains with kids will disappoint!
Creating adventures in the GSMNP is one of your cheaper options while visiting the area. The only cost is the parking tag, which you can purchase at daily, weekly or annual rates.
Two of our family favorites in the GSMNP are Cades Cove and Clingmans Dome. Cades Cove is an 11-mile loop where visitors can hike, have a chance to see wildlife, picnic or relax. Cades Cove loop is closed to vehicles on Wednesdays during the Summer months for cyclists and pedestrians to enjoy. Clingmans Dome is the highest point in the smokies. On a clear day, you can see up to 100 miles. The hike up to Clingmans Dome is paved and short, but very steep.

River Rat Tubing
Imagine a beautiful, sunny day floating in a tube down the Little River in Townsend. Ok, maybe even a rainy day. Sounds fun, right? Tube and life-jacket rentals are included in the cost. Kids love tubing down the river, and of course the private rock jumping area.
This attraction does have age requirements, children must be at least 3 years old to participate. There are two outposts to choose from. One option is family and dog-friendly, whereas the other outpost is an option for those whom are more adventurous. You can tube down the river once (takes about 2 hours depending on water levels), or your ticket includes all-day access. Water levels can sometimes affect operations of this activity. Last tip on this one for now: buy the stick or paddle!
Anakeesta
Anakeesta, located in Gatlinburg, is one of our favorites. The kids love it! It all starts with the ride up the mountain. The Chondola ride, which we refer to as the sky lift, is part of the experience itself. It is an open-air chair lift that takes you from the main Gatlinburg strip to the top of the mountain which is where all of the activities are. If you have smaller children or want to feel more secure during the trip up the mountain, there is an enclosed Chondola cabin option as well. Another option is the Ridge Rambler, which is a truck ride up the mountain. Day or night, the views of the Smoky Mountains are beautiful.
Once you’re at the top of the mountain, there is so much to do! You could easily make this an all-day adventure, or keep it to a few hours. Playgrounds, shopping, dining, did I mention the views, oh and ice cream of course? The Treetop Skywalk, which is connected bridges through the trees, is our favorite. There are two mountain coasters and zip lining on-site as well, although not included in your admission price. Anakeesta is a perfect stop for your trip to the Smoky Mountains with kids.
Anakeesta has a new food and drink festival that recently started, United Tastes of America. This festival will run until August 11, 2024 according to their website. Although we did not participate, you can purchase a tasting pass to taste state-themed foods as you travel across the country trying different cuisines. For example, the Kentucky line-up includes Bluegrass Bourbon Bread Pudding. Sounds good to me! I will definitely get the tasting pass next time. Daily live music, famous landmarks of America and tasty treats make the perfect theme for a Summer festival.
The Island
Your family fun destination! The Island is located in Pigeon Forge. Most of you probably know the Island because of the Great Smoky Mountain Wheel. All the things to do here. Eat, play, shop, wine tasting, and rides for the kids. I see people asking on social media a lot wanting to choose between the Island and Dollywood, totally different vibe.
When you enter the Island, you will see the huge water fountain which is coordinated with lights and music. The fountain is surrounded by rocking chairs, so a great place to take a break after your shopping. Another popular stop for the kids is Build-a-bear. The Island has a ropes course and rides. One of my favorite attractions at the Island is SkyFly: Soar America. This is a theater where you get to experience the sensations of soaring across several iconic locations within the United States such as the Niagara Falls.
Another one of our favorites at the Island is eating at Paula Deen’s Family Kitchen. The southern-style meals are divine. I have seen great reviews of the breakfast there but have not yet experienced it myself. You can find any type of treat at the Island: fudge, ice cream, pizza, lemonade. We go to the Island regularly but it can be costly if you participate in a lot of activity and shopping. We do a lot of window shopping, relaxing at the fountain, and dinner of course. Parking is free, and there is a tram if you must park far away.
The Smoky Mountains area certainly has something for everybody. Some attractions and activities are more budget-friendly than others.
